Made: Guyana

Calabash bowl, blackened on inside, red coloured outside, decorated with mineral pigments and sealed with a plant sap. Decorated with a series of bands with festoons around rim on inside. The design in the basin consists of a fancy fruit with leaves and flowers, surrounded with blue dots circled with tiny yellow dots. Cuming label in bowl:'Araapo or Calabash, Guiana, S. America'.
Has a label pasted to base cut from the Guiana Exhibition catalogue. From the Guiana Exhibition, 1840, collected by Robert Schomburgk in South America, 1835-9. British Guyana, South America.
