Decorated calabash bowl, outer surface yellow coloured, inner surface blackened and decorated with mineral pigments, sealed with a plant sap. The design is a broad band of parallel lines in dark red, gold/yellow and green, repeated in two bands with a central line bordered by small dots on both sides. The design in the basin is made up of small triangles and small circles surounded by dots distributed at intervals. From the centre of the basin is a radiating cross of joined up half circles set of with small dots.
Has Cuming label on base: 'Arrapo or Calabash. From the Guiana Exhibition, 1840, collected by Robert Schomburgk in South America, 1835-9. British Guyana, South America.
