Bowl made from half of a calabash. the outer surface is decorated by staining the rind black and peeling away part to leave motifs around upper edge and leaf and flower style design radiating from base, also small squares of applied gold leaf. The inner surface is stained a light reddish brown. Has small Cuming label pasted: 'Peru'. South America, early 19th Century.
