Welcome to Southwark Collections

This site contains highlights from the collections of the Cuming Museum, Southwark Art Collection and Local History Library and Archives. Unfortunately we are not able to have our museum collections on display at the moment. However, for local and family history research you can visit the Southwark Local History Library and Archives located in the John Harvard Library on Borough High Street near London bridge. Over the next few years we will be developing new public facilities and galleries through the redevelopment of the former Walworth Town Hall building. The museum was located there until a fire damaged the site in March 2013. In the meantime we are currently building a new collections website, so look out for the re launch of this site in summer 2015.

We care for thousands of objects, archives and artworks and welcome research enquiries and other queries about our collections. However gaining access to our collections is severely limited at the moment while they are in storage awaiting new premises, so please do bear with us. If you have a query or want to find out more about our services, including activities, events, contacts and opening times, please follow the links below to our council web pages.

The Three Southwark Collections

The Southwark Collections database contains records for the three main collections; the Cuming Museum collection, which includes the Cuming Family Bequest and local history collection; the Southwark Art collection, made up of art work from the foundation collection of the South London Gallery and other works collected in the Borough of Southwark; and the Local History Library image collection, featuring historic prints, maps, photographs and other images illustrating the history of the borough of Southwark.

For each of the three collections there is information about the history and background to the collection and featured highlights.

Search the Collections

To search the collections there is a quick search to discover more and an advanced search for objects and an advanced search for people for more specific queries.

The Help page gives detailed instructions on how to use the database.
